Can't hear modem

I just updated to OS 10.2.2 from 9.2. I cannot get the modem sound when 
dialing out to the Internet or Fax. The modem works fine for everything 
(so far), but the lack of modem sound is hard to get used to.

I've tried:

1. created a new user
2. thrown away a modem.plist file
3. reloaded os-x (updated method)
4. called Apple; they have no idea why this is happening.

Anybody else have this problem???
