Well, to add fuel to the fire, Larry from Other World Computing says 
that OWC is reconsidering again releasing their iDVD enabler for 
external drives (about the 10th post down here):

...claiming that the MPEG-2 licensing issues that Apple used to stop 
OWC last time now go away, with Apple selling copies of iDVD to anyone 
who wants it.
