FW hard drive won't mount

Hey gang,

I have a 40 Gig LaCie FW Pocket hard drive which will no longer mount 
in either OX 9 or OS X. All extensions and drivers are loaded for both 
OS's. The System Profiler sees that the drive is attached, but the OS 
will not mount the HD. OS X reports an error that the drive has no 
volumes that can be recognized by the OS. Is there any utility that can 
correct that problem with out reformatting the HD? If not is there any 
way to recover the data myself? Lastly, if not can any one recommend a 
good data recovery service that they have had an experience with? As
