The DC board supplies the required 5V and 12V DC for the Cube 
internals. That includes all the internal drives, and definitely 
firewire and USB ports. So yes, any external device powered from the 
cube puts additional load on th DC board.
The exception are ADC displays, they draw their power directly from the 
external power supply brick.
