System madness

Here's a question for you Unix geeks and Mac geniuses:

I have lost the "login items" option, including its icon, from the 
"personal" row of  System Preferences. In addition, I have gained an 
additional "Accounts" icon, which resides in the "Other" row of System 
Preferences. The original "Accounts" is still in the "system" row, I 
believe where it usually can be found.

Is there a way to correct this...

1) Without losing all my system preferences?
2) Without reinstalling the whole system.
