insert cd, attach ipod not starting itunes anymore...

hi,

itunes doesn't start up anymore when inserting a cd, or attaching ipod
(30gb new style) to my cube.  i upgraded itunes to 4.1 ish but this
didn't help.  i'm (still!) on 10.1.2 ish.

cd icon and ipod icon appear on desktop.  when i start itunes, it sees
them ok.  settings in itunes.preferences all look ok.  nothing else
changed, all happened quite suddenly.

any ideas?
