You might try booting in 'Verbose Mode' . You can start one time by holding 'command-V' during boot. Once you get the text screen, you can let go. Or you can enter 'sudo nvram boot-args=-v' in a terminal window and you machine will boot in verbose mode every time. I like to watch the messages, gives me early warning about any OS or hardware problems.
