try rebooting in os 9 and then insert the cd. if it sees it then, it's not a hardware issue but an os x issue. i had the same issue recently in someone's emac. the cd didn't show up in os x, showed up in os 9, and then rebooting back in os x resolved the issue. not sure what happened but it seemed to fix it.
