It arrived last week and all is OK. If you want I can send you the address or link to his ebay.com-offer. I payed 44,70 $ (not too much in Euro at the moment), all incl. Since the diagnosis of my cube was wrong I don't need that part. (It is another part or my ADC-Display itseld, not the CD-Board) If you are interested, I would sell you the part for the same prize as I payed (incl. shipping). PROBLEM ----------------------------------------------------- My cube (original 450 MHz) run (too long) with a quite hot harddisk. Result: the cube shut off suddenly and then it didn't start with again. When I disconnected the display it would start and shut down again, when I plug in the (ADC-TFT!) display. WHAT I TRIED ----------------------------------------------------- I displaced the graphic card (original ATI Rage 128) with a similar card. (Of course after removing the hot HD, with a cooler one...) No effect: the display kills the cube, prevents it from starting. By the time: a CRT-display runs without problems, the cube starts and so on... So I thought it's the DC-Board. Now it has arrived, was built in and... same effects as before: Cube won't start with ADC attached, is killed when ADC is attached to running cube, will start and run with CRT. So I think it must be the ADC-TFT (formac gallery 17"). I' haven't tested the display at another machine. But there are no bad pins at the ADC-Connector. QUESTION to you all: -------------------------------------------------------- Must it be the display? Or can it be a question of the cube? > Which part might be defect or problematic? If it must be the display: any experience with such a display-problem? (I wonder: which reasons (besides "friend" hazard) may shut down a display connected to a cube?) Have you checked that monitor technical specifications? (Sorry for asking but this might make all the difference). It would be great if you could check that monitor on another Mac machine with a powerfull Graphics Unit. You didn't tell us this was the monitor you were using before changing the hard disk... was it the same? Maybe the new HD require more voltage from the Cube and it is using the power needed for the monitor to opperate properly. I had to remove a 120GB Seagate Barracuda V because it was turning my Cube useless. It required more power than an older 80GB Samsung SpinPoint and the Cube was showing a 'looping' symptom of a sudden shutdown. Can anyone help ? Can i find somewhere an apple part, a gigadesign upgrade ? Thanks Cyril AUBINEAU Hello Cyril, I just bought a used one from a dealer in New York. It arrived last week and all is OK. If you want I can send you the address or link to his ebay.com-offer. I payed 44,70 $ (not too much in Euro at the moment), all incl. Since the diagnosis of my cube was wrong I don't need that part. (It is another part or my ADC-Display itseld, not the CD-Board) If you are interested, I would sell you the part for the same prize as I payed (incl. shipping). Let me know if you are interested in the board or the informations. (via direct mail, please) regards Stefan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <096A78FF-3C20-4D34-B349-18161B1DE165@mac.com> This is a fairly common problem with Cubes. There is a gasket positioned in the outer case around the power button area. I don't believe anyone knows the exact failure mechanism but the solution is generally to cut a piece of normal paper a little larger than the gasket (a little larger than a quarter) and using a small piece of thin scotch tape, tape it so it is fairly secure. This paper will cause the switch to be less sensitive. The paper, depending on what you use, should be translucent so you can still see the light through it. Most have found success with this fix although a few people have not found it fixes the erratic behavior. Good Luck. Upgraded to 10.5 from 10.4 ( clean install on new hard drive in external case, powered by 1.24 G4 tower ) ( 120 gig seagate ) installed drive into cube, works very well. Faster I think than 10.4. From what I've heard from other people, Leopard is usually equal or snappier than Tiger on the same hardware. Keep in mind that the feeling does not come form the raw speed of the operations - the new finder in multithreaded and more responsive, quick view speeds most of your tasks, the network (samba) stuff is significiantly improved. If you check the system requirements for OS-10.5, you will see that your Cube does not have a fast enough processor to install that version of OS without doing some tricks. What you need is a 866MHz or faster G4 or above Mac with a DVD drive in it. You connect the Cube with that Mac with a FireWire cable and start the Cube in Target Mode by holding down the "T" key while starting up. Start the fast Mac with the OS-10.5 DVD inserted, it will begin the installation procedure just like normal. During the first steps of the installation, you MUST select the hard drive in the Cube as your installation destination. From there on, it is just a normal installation procedure. If you want to save some space on your hard drive, do a "Custom Install" and do not select the parts of OS-10.5 that you do not need or want. By doing a custom install, you can shrink OS-10.5 down to almost half the "Easy Install" size. You also get rid of the language translators and printer drivers that you don't have the need for. I used this method to install Leopard on a 400MHz G4 without any problems. It does run a bit slower than my G5 PPC, but that is acceptable considering the age of the G4. As to the problem with your Nano, I have no answer. My 30G Video iPod works perfectly with my new MacBookPro, and it is more than a year old now. However, the Leopard experience on my upgraded Cube with a 1.4 GHz G4 and a GeForce2 MX or GeForce 6200 graphics card is as good as with Tiger.
