The Cube was originally a 450MHz model that I've upgraded with a GigaDesigns 1.2GHz processor. I installed a fan when I did the processor upgrade. I have installed a Radeon 7500 video card with a heat sink and fan. The hard drive is a Western Digital 320G that I've partitioned with the HiCap driver. I'm currently running Leopard, but the problem was happening on Tiger before the upgrade. The problem is that the Cube will freeze unexpectedly while I am copying large files across a network connection or between the internal and the external drive. It will also freeze when I am playing a song in iTunes. This is repeatable and happens every time I try to use iTunes. The Cube has an iSub attached along with the standard speakers. I have replaced the motherboard, the video card, and the PMU. I have also tested the RAM and it consistently passes. I have not replaced the GigaDesigns CPU with the original processor, but I'm planning to do that over the weekend. I appreciate any suggestions for what to test/replace next. Hey Fred - I know it may not be directly related to the copy problem, bit iTunes makes me suspect...have you tried what happens if you disconnect the iSub? Riba, Good suggestion. I just tried that by unplugging the iSub and playing a song in iTunes. The Cube froze at about the 30 second mark. (I should add that I'm confident it isn't an iTunes preferences problem because this is a new installation of the OS.) When I tried three more times (just for good measure), the Cube froze a couple of seconds into the song. Also tried playing from the iTunes music store with the same results. I also swapped the RAM and conducted the tests with the same results. I think it probably isn't the RAM. It wouldn't start from the hard drive or , just shows the question mark folder. When I put the hard drive in an external firewire case Diskwarrior reported problems with the boot partition. So I erased and did a fresh install of 10.4 and reinstalled the drive but it still wouldn't boot. However it will boot with the same drive in an external firewire case. The same drive will also boot up in my other cube. The cube won't boot into target disk mode, I hear the hard drive spin up, the screen flickers then the power switch light switches off. Trying to boot to a CD produces the same effect. I'm thinking the IDE controller is fried. I had a momentary inspiration to upgrade the CPU hoping that would fix the problem but looking at the machine I'm thinking that the hard drive plugs into the motherboard and replacing the CPU probably wouldn't replace the IDE controller. Any thoughts? Anyone got a spare motherboard? Anyone interested in a cube project? The freezes that I was experiencing playing songs in iTunes, copying large files, and during installations have gone away. Before swapping the CPU, I swapped the RAM and experienced the same freezes. I also swapped the hard drive for a smaller one and still experienced the problem. I didn't think it was heat because I have a fan in the bottom of the Cube and a heat sink with a fan on the video card. I had also run it outside of the enclosure and experienced the freezes. Also, as someone suggested, I called the GigaDesigns office. I left voice mail, but it was never returned. Thanks for your suggestions. This may be the point where I give up my beautiful Cube and watch for the much rumored Mac Mini speed bump.
