dark screen

I'm new to the list and am seeking advice.  I recently had my machine 
apart to upgrade the hd and ram.  However, when I re-assembled ( no 
screws left over !) the display was dark.  I could see a very faint 
trace of the desktop and know I was booting.

I purchased another used display and unfortunately get the same 
behavior.   I had read that perhaps this was due to a bad backlight, 
but am hoping the display I purchased was not doa.   Any suggestions 
would be appreciated.
