If you can boot from a CD try doing so then launch drive setup.  I 
think it includes the ability to update the disk driver.  This is 
NON-destructive, it doesn't hurt your data.  I know some Apple disk 
utility did this long ago (Pre-X) but I'm not positive which.

That however sounds like a bad HD connection or such.
