freeze/clock problems

My G4, 450, 256k (AGP) has been having odd problems since I installed 
OS X and updated to 10.2.4.  I ran 9.2.2 for several months and 
didn't have this problem.  It acts like the battery is dead which it 
may be.  For no particular reason and at no predictable time, the 
computer will freeze and the time and date will be reset.  The year 
may be 1904 or it may be something else later.  1904 is the usual 
year.  The power hasn't been disrupted.  I might be in the middle of 
something or it might be asleep.  It may occur once in a week or it 
may occur twice a day.  The computer probably hasn't been without 
power for more than 10 minutes since I took it out of the box 
whenever that was.  When did they sell these early downgraded G4s?

I don't mind replacing the battery but I wonder if something else is 
happening.  Does anyone have a suggestion?  Thanks for your help.
