One situation that could cause this to occur is if your internal battery is 
beginning to fail. Many computers will reset to a default preference for 
monitor resolution when the battery fails.

Another occurrence could be a software reset from a game program. Some games 
will reset the resolution in order to operate properly (for the game) and the 
monitor resolution must be reset after you quit the game.
