As I said, I can just add an IDE cable and run it from the ATA100 connector,
but this might affect airflow.

I'm not sure about the MDD Macs, but I have a beige G3 that I don't 
have any hard drives connected to the on-board bus, and it boots just 
fine. I think as long as the controllers are bootable you should be OK. Mel
