Help USB2 external HDD

Hi all...

I have an old G3 Desktop upgraded with a G4/500 ZIF. I am upgrading to a new
machine (don't tell my wife) but since this box has been running really
well, I decided to put a USB2 card (ADS) in it and got a nice external case
and 120Gb HDD to store, catalog and stream audio from.

I have been trying to import data into iTunes for some time now. Either
copying files from another drive or a network share or importing directly
into iTunes, the drive locks up. It runs for a while, copies 200-300Mb then
hangs.

Sometimes re-launching Finder clears things, but usually it takes the
machine down, and a reboot is needed. I have tried two different USB2 cards
and two different external cases and two different Maxtor drives.... to no
avail.

I have also set the drives as both master and Cable select, to the same end.

I am out of ideas.... any thoughts out there?
