[G4] Kernal Panics

Sorry folks ...but I just have to ask!

What is a Kernal Panics?

I have my Quicksilver for just under a year and OSX
for about the same amount of time and from time to
time I see or hear the words ...Kernal Panics! please
what is it and how do I know it it happens to me and
my mac?
