Hi Anne...

	Even if all you do is startup, you still log in... it just happens
automatically so you don't notice.  If you place the items you want in
your Login items, it will all work fine.
	You can get Classic to launch automatically by going to the
Classic prefs (System Preferences -> Classic) and checking the appropriate
box.  However, if you place Classic apps in your Login items, Classic will
launch automatically anyway.
