[G4] Pictures appearing in email postings?

Lately, I have begun receiving the odd email or two from the group with 
a user's picture imposed over the top two lines of text.

Can anyone explain this occurrence to help me learn more about what is 
happening with my Mac? Is there a procedure to stop these pictures from 
obscuring my text? The pictures are interesting sometimes, but do 
interfere with my reading.
