I've tried this before;

Clear out Safari's icon cache?

  To do so, exit Safari (just in case) and remove the folder 
~/Library/Safari/Icons (note that ~ means your Home directory).

  This folder holds all the favicons that Safari has downloaded, and 
tends to get overloaded. Clearing it out generally speeds up Safari 
quite a bit (depending on how much is in there, of course).
