[G4] backing up suggestions

I just downloaded Silver Keeper and have been trying to use it to back 
up my start up disk.  The entire contents of my start up disk total 
about 27 GB.  I am backing up to a 40 GB internal drive.  For some 
reason, Silver Keeper stops after copying a little over 4 GB and says 
the destination is full.  Finder shows that there is still about 32 GB 
available on the destination.  Why won't the entire source back up?  It 
seems to copy my applications and then stops.
