I would suggest a Pioneer (DV-RW) DVR-108. 

Should be somewhat less than US$100. 

Easy to replace. Hardest part might be fitting the replacement around the trap door and making it open.  That took me about 10 minutes of jiggling with my Quicksilver (I replaced with a DVR-105 last year, but the DVR-108 is newer).  Otherwise, it was a snap.
