Steve,

I'm not able to follow your technical explanation much further than 
to get the feeling that there is some disadvantage to using the "Set 
Date and Time Automatically" feature in the Preferences.

Are you recommending leaving the box unchecked and only visiting the 
pane and checking it when you want to reset your clock?
