Permissions diagnosis & repair via Disk Utlity is always a good piece of
hygiene.  It's helped settle 
down some occasional flakiness in various applications.

It problems persist with AppleWorks, it might be a preferences 
corruption  problem. If so then try removing the preference folder / 
file for AppleWorks...
