[G4] cloneing

Wondering if anyone can help, I'm trying to clone my G4 runnning  
Tiger onto a firewire external drive using the disk utility but it  
keeps giving me this error!
  (An error (2) occurred while copying. (No such file or directory)
I have followed the instruction from Ted Landaus Mac OS x Help line.  
Must be missing a step or the external hard drive may be the problem?
