http://www.dealram.com lists 256 MB for your Mac starting at $21.  
Unless you know you really need it don't bother getting more.  
Performance gains flatten out significantly at around 512 MB.

More memory shouldn't make any difference as far as crashing. 256 MB  
meets Apple's minimum requirements so more memory just helps  
everything run faster.
