Jerry,

Had the same issues on a BW 450. Removed the SCSI
card,PCI USB,the PCI ATI Video and all of the
memory(except a 128 stick needed to boot. Still would
not install. Same half install process to black screen
that you experienced.Tried all of 128 sticks and
various combinations thereof (BW originally had 512
MB).Still would not install.

Knowing that OS X.3 is extemely picky about RAM.
Finally went and pulled a clean 512 stick from my DA
(133 Mhz RAM no less), and the install went fine. Shut
down, re-installed the four 128 sticks of 100 Mhz, the
SCSI card,PCI USB,PCI ATI and everything has worked
great for the past two years.

Just my experience. Maybe it will help.
