Once, you solve that problem, take a look at <http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html>, especially the ones dealing with backing up (Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, and SilverKeeper are good alternatives to Retrospect, which uses a proprietary backup scheme) and software updates.
