[G4] Instant Messaging

I'm trying to convince a friend to leave AOL and have narrowed their 
arguments down to one - wanting to have Instant Messaging "Buddy 
List" access.

iChat seems like overkill for simple keyboarding (also requires Tiger?)
I see that AOL has AIM available for non-AOL members, but what's the 
downside? Are you tied to their email and username?

Any help in this area from users (preferably those with some 
familiarity with AOL) would be appreciated.
