[G4] upgrading to 10.4 and possible faulty nic

This is not correct. Quoting from Apple: "Requirements Macintosh  
computer with PowerPC G5, G4, or G3 Processor; built in Firewire ..."

Tiger runs just fine on my 400 MHz AGP.
