Carol,
	I don't know what free or open-source programs may exist for the Mac, 
but in Toast 7 Titanium, if you go to the Recorder menu and choose Disc 
Info you get a window like this that will tell you who the disc 
manufacturer was:

If you then click on the More button it takes you to a web page that can 
tell you more about discs from that manufacturer.
