Any drive can be bootable; it depends if the appropriate information is
written to the boot sector when the drive is formatted.  If you install OS X
to the drive it should automatically make it bootable.  Whether or not your
Mac can boot off it is a different story, but it sounds like you're in
luck...unless that note you quoted only applies to x86 boxes.
