[G4] Unusual symbol

Hello,

I have a mate looking at a 1Ghz G4.  The machine powers on, but when he tries to load an OS, he says he get's and error symbol.  He describes it as a 'torn folder'. ( I hate doing diagnosis over the phone )

Does anyone know what this symbol could mean?
