Launch the Mail application.
Open the Mail preferences and then open the Accounts folder.
Select the incorrectly configured account and click on the "minus"  
symbol to delete it.
Create a new account by clicking on the "plus" symbol and configure it  
correctly.
Quit the Mail preferences and you will see your "new" and correctly  
configured account.
Collect and read your mail.
