[G4] Slow reboot?

In theory I could hook up a firewire drive but I don't have a bootable one and I can't find my install disks...moving two houses worth of belongings does interesting things to my sense of order

Can you try swapping out the hard drive, or boot from a FireWire drive?  It may be getting errors from your hard drive, making it have to retry read operations over and over again.
