When ordering items from the USA to import to the UK it is best if you
can keep the total cost including postage and packing below £18. That
way you avoid being charged VAT (at 20%) on your import and you also
avoid the flat rate (£8) charge from Royal Mail (for collecting the VAT
from you and giving it to Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs). To find out
how many $ you can spend check the exchange rate HMRC are using for the
current month on their web site at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/exrate/

This information should help with working out what the actual cost of an
import to the UK is likely to be.
