The way I avoid the Spinning Ball Of Death in Safari is to periodically clean 
the pipes and trash Safari preferences. Here is the path:

Quit Safari. In finder, check computer, check owner computer, check view as 
columns, check library, check preferences, select Apple Safari.plist and drag to 
trash. Empty trash. 

When you next open Safari, re-set preferences. I only need to select "open with 
empty page" so all I need do is hit "M" for mail. Also a good idea to keep 
Safari history from getting constipated.

Perhaps Ron is on a dial-up line and the spinning disc is indicating a file is 
being loaded or searched? Maybe he has a noisy line and it is requiring many 
rereads?
