I upgraded to 10.4.3 with the 97 MB download, and now the fans go at full tilt and will not slow down. I got Apple on the phone, and they are having me reload the original system that came with the computer, then upgrade back to Tiger. Hope is that the fans will behave. --Steve From vlabenz at aol.com Tue Nov 1 13:16:55 2005 From: vlabenz at aol.com (vlabenz@aol.com) Date: Tue Nov 1 13:17:05 2005 Subject: [G5] 10.4.3 full upgrade revs up iMac G5 fans; won't stop In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <8C7AD40B8CE1500-1D70-15FF@MBLK-M09.sysops.aol.com> Yesterday I downloaded the 10.4.3 upgrade. Lots of interesting stories on the discussions, which is a very good place to get answers most of the time. Also remember it's just an update, I usually wait a couple of weeks to see what is good or bad On the G5 fans, what level of tech support where you at ,if you were at level 1 STOP and call back and ask to speak to a level 2 customer service rep. The level one guys read from a list, when the list runs out, so does their knowledge, they just try to get rid of you. Telling you to clean everything out and go back to tiger is not good info, except in some cases you may have to do. Say you bought this as a refurb. If it's your computer and things been going smoothly for 6 months on 10.4 . I would not do that, just for a update.. This is not a whole new system, just a update. The level 1 guys will also tell you all the answers are at the mac info page, well I am sure you looked there, they can be very rude, you never know what country your calling. Get a level 2 tech and your answer will be there in 2 minutes, the level 1 guys can be rude, just hold to your right under Apple Care to speak to someone more knowledgeable. In the couple of times I have had to use it, the level 2 guy understood Macs and answered my question in 2 minutes. This after 30 minutes of of wasting time on level 1. Download the MacOSXCombo10.4.3.dmg updater (105 MB for my G5/2.0 Dual) and reinstall after repairing your file permissions with Disk Utility, then repair your file permissions, again. The second suggestion is check out Monday's item on excess fan noise in OS 10.4 at http://www.macosxhints.com Mike >A 56 MB is awful low, there is the approximately 95 MB in the stand >alone updater, The combo hits about 107 to 110, check the apple web >site for the exact size. I already reported it to this list. I went through the re-installation with the tech. BAD NEWS! My wife has a new iMac G5 with built-in speakers and microphone, but even though the echo problems with Skype and/or Gizmo (another VoIP application that is Skype-like, but uses standard SIP protocols) were less noticeable than with my Quicksilver G4 using external speakers and a USB microphone, there were still issues. So, I bought her a Plantronics DSP-400 USB "Ultimate Performance Headset" (earphones plus microphone in one unit) from NewEgg.com. It was to have been a Christmas gift, but she was experiencing echo problems today with calls to relatives, so I broke down and gave it to her today. Like any good Mac-compatible product, it worked as soon as I plugged it into a USB slot on the back of the iMac. And, no echo. I think these were initially designed for gaming, but they are great for VoIP, too. Just for the record, the price is $44 + $5 shipping. --Steve
