This was discussed years ago at a BMAC meeting, but things have changed a lot since then I'm sure. Regarding speed and DSL is it true that most of the DSL lines are dependent on the Verizon central offices? If so, and if it is dependent on distance, then do I just have to do some math and take my current speeds and (in my case, Earthlink's) quoted speed and figure that that percent will be about the same from another provider? I.e. If Earthlink quotes download speeds of 3Mb and it's coming into my office at 1Mb then I can assume that another providers' will also come in at about 1/3 of what they quote? Regarding speed and cable, from your comment above that cable can be limited to the number of people using the same cable - is that on the whole or at any given point, and in your neighborhood? Regarding the other posting regarding Fiber Optics - I'm sure that many of you saw the article in the Globe a few days ago. >http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2005/11/28/verizon_tests_sup er_fast_dsl_as_it_also_rolls_out_fiber_optics< Though as someone on the listserve that we know and love and I concurred, and as the article essentially says, this will likely be years before each of us see it in our own neighborhoods. Jackie P.s. I went onto Speakeasy as suggested and found that my actual download speed for my Earthlink DSL is a whopping 767 kbps!!! I'll definitely be changing in some way! Is there any of my equipment that could be slowing this down once it hits the house? Is it a purchase or a rental? Recently, my dad got DSL. They wanted to charge him $80-$100 for a wireless router. Don't remember what brand it was or what specs came with it, but they can be had for alot less than that, and all he needed was basic stuff. They also told me (when I called) that their router was the ONLY router that would work (ha!). Whichever way you decide to go, Apple, Linksys or whomever else, you should be fine. I am asuming the G4 Powerbook already has an Extreme card installed, so any 802.11g wifi router will do, unless the list says otherwise to a particular line or lines. One possible solution would be to uninstall Shock Wave, then install the latest version. Once you've installed it, it'll automatically be placed where Explorer can find it. Though it's also possible the file you're trying to open needs a specific plug-in, as the message box you're getting says, but since I don't use Shock Wave, I don't know how to explain where to get it. One other possible solution is to try another browser. Explorer for Mac is an ancient browser, and to my knowledge hasn't been updated in years. Try FireFox. It's way, WAY, better, and it's a free download. There's actually a very complimentary article on it in today's N. Y. Times. However, a quick google revealed the following; Back up your Internet Explorer Favorites If you use this program, you should also back up your Internet Explorer Favorites file. Open Internet Explorer by selecting the Go menu From the Go menu choose Applications > Internet Explorer: From the Favorites menu, select Organize favorites When the window opens, select the File menu > Export Favorites Type "favorites.html" into the Save As field and save onto your formatted disk. Close all open windows. I would assume that you could then import them...I'm sure google could turn up something on that as well. Also, I would think that Explorer would store them in a folder in the library or something and they could just be copied and dumped into the proper folder for the copy of Explorer that you plan to use. Result - bought an ipod nano for him for Christmas, and loaded it with many many hours of classical music and spoken word for him - at 80 plus he is delighted with it!! Went to reload my ipod shuffle - message I needed to update- so did. Now no response to my dear little shuffle, and it seems a bit dead! Have looked through Apple help sections but not much good. Had bright idea this am of restarting in 9 and using the itunes there, instead of using my normal 10.3.9. Using a fairly old G4 but keep it updated and 100 + disc. (my first mac was a dear little grey box, now in a museum!) Is this a daft idea?? Be grateful for any help to make my ipod shuffle live again. Using a fairly old G4 but keep it updated and 100 + disc. (my > first mac was a dear little > grey box, now in a museum!) There was a recent issue with some shuffles being "broken" by the iTunes 6.0.1 update: . I think this problem was addressed by the most recent firmware updater for the iPod. I know you say "I needed to update- so did", but i'm not sure whether it was iTunes or the iPod software that you updated. Try running Software Update. There shouldn't be an issue with using two iPods on the same Mac: I use a shuffle and a nano on the same user accunt without any problems. The shuffle (and other current iPods) won't work with OS9. AFAIK they need at least iTunes 4.x. Miche.
