Have G4 - early one, and using OS 10.3.8. Most of family are abroad, and have persuaded me to download and use Skype for talking direct to them. Apart from early problems with it, when I forgot to turn on 'contacts only' and got lots of Arab gentlemen talking at me, I can see it is probably a good thing. However, I can hear callers, but they cannot hear me. Do I buy a usb mike, if so what do you all use. Still a bit dubious about Skype, but perhaps its my age catching up with me at last!! At that point AppleWorks will open them just fine. You then have the choice of leaving them as text or saving them again in AppleWorks. Some of the formating may change so you might have to do some altering of that. And if you have a large amount of them it will take some time. The advantage of this choice is you can try that right now and in the event it does not work you can continue your search for 4.0. Your iMac only has Firewire 400 so you will not get the increased speed of firewire 800, and USB 1.1 not USB 2. You cannot just reinstall the Disk Burner software. It's part of the system If you have another system that is working, you can search for Disk Burner and try and find all the pieces (and there are probably lots of them). The only other solution would be to reinstall OS X to see if that fixes the problem. ...Duane ps I hate that Macintosh has become so much like Windows where the "usual" solution is to re-install. Ack! Have you used Windows much? I wouldn't say that they are anything alike. Windows has strange and bizarrely occurring instabilities which lead to the necessity of reinstalling Windows just to get a basic functioning OS. After a year of using OS X, and trying out a lot of different software, my system is still as responsive and stable as ever. The same was never true of Windows, even XP, where installing/deleting a lot of software was nearly guaranteed to leave you with some sort of corruption and overall system slowdown. If Disk Burner was deleted, it was due to something that the user did. One can hardly fault OS X for what happens when people remove pieces of the OS. XP, on the other hand, lets just about any program modify c:\windows\system32\ which can easily lead to problems. Even with that said, I'd be willing to bet that if you could find the missing file(s) and replace them from another Mac running the same version of the OS, it would work again. In XP, you might have all the right pieces on your system and it STILL might not work because of DLL problems. Just last night I had to replace a DLL because my not-very-old installation of XP in VirtualPC had become corrupted. Any shortcuts? Same thing with repairing permissions. If I do it on the Admin/ Root account do I need to do it on the other two accounts? Do not do any updates from the non-admin accounts. The only place that makes sense to update is the admin account. The admin account will have access and get the permissions set correctly for all of the global resources. ...Duane From duanemurphy at mac.com Mon Mar 21 12:19:22 2005 From: duanemurphy at mac.com (Duane Murphy) Date: Mon Mar 21 12:19:34 2005 Subject: [HM] Soft Updates/ Permissions In-Reply-To: <20050321193428.75715.qmail@web21127.mail.yahoo.com> References: <20050321193428.75715.qmail@web21127.mail.yahoo.com> Message-ID: <20050321201923.11219@linux.murphyslogic.com> --- At Mon, 21 Mar 2005 11:34:28 -0800, Howard Scudder wrote: >Im running a network for a school using macs with a >Admin/ Teacher and student accounts on each computer. >(my bosses idea) > >Ok, is there a way to do a software update on all >three accounts at the same time? Im setting up a computer to make a disc image for net installs to classroom computers. Ok, I set up the computer (in X) with programs needed for classrooms and also ran the installers for a few educational CD-Roms (in 9). I put the Icons on the dock, defragmented, disc doc, and repaired permissions. Everything runs great. The perfect classroom computer! Ok, heres the problem. I go into accounts, to the student user and place "Some Limits" (cannot modify dock, etc..). When I do this and click an icon for one of the CDs it will not run. Runs fine with no limits but when I apply "Some Limits" cant run a CD. The error message is "Failed to find resource file MACINTOSH HD:APPLICATIONS (MAC OS 9)" Any Ideas?
