I set up the drive and needed to format it with Disk Utility. The icon for LaCie was visible on my desktop. I am running 10.2.8. I opened Disk utility, but couldn't find where to initialize the drive. So I thought maybe partitioning/Current might do the trick. I gave the drive a name and hit partition. Now the drive doesn't show up at all and I get a message that I need to initialize it. So..... What am I doing wrong? This should be so easy and I feel dumb! I went to Apple support, but it doesn't tell me how to initialize! Click on the drive. Click on the Erase tab. Select a format (Mac OS Extended - Journaled preferably). Give it a name and click Erase. By the way, if the drive showed up on the Desktop, you probably didn't need to do anything, but maybe it was formatted for Windows, so erasing is a good idea. ...Duane From tjoh7019 at bigpond.net.au Sat Sep 3 23:53:16 2005 From: tjoh7019 at bigpond.net.au (Tony Johansen) Date: Sat Sep 3 23:53:21 2005 Subject: [HM] Trying to initialize an external drive In-Reply-To: <20050904024330.4314@linux.murphyslogic.com> Message-ID: On 4/9/2005 12:43 PM, "Duane Murphy" wrote: > --- At Sat, 3 Sep 2005 14:19:20 -0700, Jane Sprando wrote: > >> So..... LaCie HD come formatted with FAT 32 which OS X is able to use and is best when sharing the HD between Macs and PCs. Consequently many sales people will tell you (mine did) that it is already formatted for Mac. Not true, while Mac can use the Windows format, it works much more efficiently in Mac OS X extended and journaled. Having learned this via a similar false start, I suspect that LaCie does a very poor job of communicating these things to end users. Another thing though, Isn't this one of numerous reasons to go to either Panther or Tiger. I'm happy with staying with Panther a while yet, Apple in it's usual arrogant local way charges an arm and a leg for Tiger here in Australia (way above the conversion rate $US - $AU. Not happy Steve!) but even Panther is a big improvement over Jaguar generally, methinks. I opened Office 2004, Teacher edition, and imported the file. I have 2 problems. 1. The words in the custom header do not show up in the custom header box so that I can edit them. I tried doing it from page set up and from choosing header/footer from the menu. Neither worked. Then I just tried typing in words and they show up right over what is already there! What am I doing wrong? 2. When I printed the page, it printed the whole file, but only took up about 25% of the paper! I did not change any of the settings. How do I fix this?
