Unfortunately I had to miss it. I believe Thom Holland may have gotten you scared for no reason. An ATA is sometimes known as an IDE. I have installed an ATA-6 in a G3. The ATA/IDE standard is so common in the IBM world that backward compatability to ATA is almost a given. I can give you a published reference on ATA/IDE if you are interested. Check the Apple Knowledge Base at http://search.info.apple.com/ (note the absence of "www") for further information. Apple can also supply manuals at http://www.info.apple.com/manuals the last time I downloaded one. Hope this gives you the confidence to forge ahead on updating your G4. I am very much interested in your results because I too have a G4 and want to use it for my OS 9 mathematics files of the past ten years, as well as OS X. Best of luck and keep in touch. It is a specific Western Digital Implementation of the ATA-2 Standard. (See page 1481 of "Upgrading and Repairing Pcs" by Scott Mueller, Eleventh Edition, ISBN 0-7897-1903-7). I could continue with detail of the relationship of ATA-2 to ATA with references to other page references. But the bottom line is, use your hard drive an do not worry. Apple seems to prefer setting hard drive jumpers to "Cable Select" rather than the traditional master-Slave setting of the IBM world. The manual you got with your drive should tell you where to put the small shorting blocks to do that. Your CD ROM probably has an "ATAPI" interface. The acronym ATAPI stands for "AT Attachment Packet Interface." This is a specification that defines device side characteristics for an IDE connected peripheral such as a CD ROM. ATAPI is essentially of the SCSI command set to the IDE interface. (See page 1458 of above reference) I suggest you put your CD ROM on the first connector on a 2-connector cable. This is what Apple did on my G3 even though the end connector was not used. On a cable select system, the middle device is the slave and the end device is the master. Apple's CD ROM driver will take care of the rest. Nowlin) Date: Thu Aug 10 10:26:10 2006 Subject: [HM] Re: G4 Upgrade Project Message-ID: Howard, Because I believe you may be uncertain about how to physically install your hard drive and CD ROM, I checked the path that I used to get the 130 page mirrored door G4 manual (in pdf). I started with http://search.info.apple.com. At the top of the page is a row of possible Apple sites. I clicked on "Manuals." When that page came up, I scrolled down to the "Search" box. I entered "G4 manual" and sent it on its way. When it returned, it had the first page of 8 pages with a total of 73 results of G4 manual information. I do not know your exact model; Digital Audio, Gibabit Ethernet, etc, but I expect you can find yours there somewhere. Download the manual. The manual for the mirrored door G4 gives detailed instructions, including the locations of key release mechanisms, for the physical installation of extra hard drives. After physically attaching cables and mechanically installing you new hard drive close up your computer and boot OS 9. OS X possibly can do the rest, but I know only OS 9 methods. At first, you may be worried that your new hard drive does not appear on your desktop. The manufacturer probably anticipated that it would be used on an IBM clone. Your new hard drive just needs Macintosh drivers installed and to be formatted. If you want not to format it, it will probably work using the IBM format that it likely has. But I am uncertain as to whether other disk maintenance software made for the mac will happily handle a DOS formatted hard drive. Formatting also has the advantage of checking for bad sectors and marking them so that your data will not be at risk later. In OS 9, run "Drive Setup" to install drivers. It is certainly ion the "Utilities" folder on the installer CD of whichever version of OS 9 you use. Otherwise, it can be downloaded from Apple. Drive Setup first searches for all of your hard drives. After Drive Setup finishes its search, you will likely see your drive listed as "Untitled." If you do not see it, check your "jumper block" locations to be certain they are all on "cable select". Also, make certain that both power and signal cables are fully seated. When you do see "Untitled" listed, it will be "grayed out" because it has no Apple drivers. Ignore that detail. Select it and click on "initialize." Drive Setup will install drivers. If you want to partition your hard drive into two or more hard drives, next select "Customize volume" from the function menu. There are arguments for and against partitioning. I avoid it whenever possible. Trouble with either partition can disable all other partitions. Better to use a separate hard drive. If you want not to partition, select "Mount" from the functions menu of Drive Setup. That finishes the fist part of the software side of installing a new hard drive. Next I recommend that you format the new drive. Find your new hard drive, "untitled" on your desk top now, select it and use "Erase" under the OS 9 "Special" menu in the Finder window. That functions just as it does on 3.5 inch floppies.Select the new format that you want. "Erase" will finish the job. But don't wait for it to finish, go to bed. For an extremely large hard drive, it might be wise to plan a trip or other major activity that does not involve your Mac for the next few days. Stay ion touch, Charles H. PowerPC is all done. Intel is the future. If you're going to invest money in technology you should always invest in the latest because when you invest, it will already be outdated. Rosetta works. It's not Classic. PowerPC applications work just fine on Intel machines. Most applications are already converting. Many of them with free upgrades because in many cases, it is very easy for them. Otherwise the next version of major apps will be Intel and have new features so you'll have to upgrade any how. For most consumers a MacBook is fine rather than a MacBook Pro. There are not a lot of features different between them any longer. Jane.... I am sure you have done the following, but I will post this anyway... I am guessing your printer is connected via a USA port? Is this the same USB port you had the printer plugged into before? Have you unplugged the printer and deleted all the drivers and any reference to your printer? Then rebooted. After the computer has rebooted, you plug the printer in. Will the Mac OS ID install the correct driver for this printer? If no, then re install your printer software. I know that with drivers in Windows, sometimes you need to install the hardware first, then the software. And sometimes it is the other way around; you have to install the software then the hardware. If you mix that up, sometimes the install fails. Does your documentation say anything about this? If the above fails, you can delete your printer software again and reboot with the printer *not* plugged into the computer. Then, plug the printer into the another USB port and try it all over again. I hope this helps. jack From brian4 at sbcglobal.net Tue Aug 22 10:16:27 2006 From: brian4 at sbcglobal.net (Brian Olesky) Date: Tue Aug 22 10:16:34 2006 Subject: [HM] Epson printer won't print after upgrade to 10.3 In-Reply-To: <082220061652.29806.44EB36380002DD030000746E2200761438010B020E9D9F9C0A020E06@comcast.net> Message-ID: If you've already checked out the troubleshooting area in the manual that came with the printer, and also on Epson's Web site, you might just Google the problem. I'm guessing that you had the printer setup when you had 10.2.8, then upgraded etc to 10.3.9 and the printer didn't work. The solution is to remove the printer from the Printer Setup Utility and add it again. This resets some of the information about the printer and updates it to the latest OS information. --- At Tue, 22 Aug 2006 15:54:03 +0000, janesprando@comcast.net wrote: >Last night I upgraded my G4 iMac from 10.2.8 to 10.3, and then 10.3.9. I believe it might be a antenna issue. I looked on Apple's web site, but found no information to help me increase the range on the laptop. I was hoping for a external Wi-Fi unit. I looked at this linksys unit as a possible solution - a USB Wi-Fi receiver: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416827517&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper Of corse Linksys has no Mac software. When I plugged it in to the Mac it powered up and I can see it labeled correctly when I look at USB devices. But the Internet connection wizard will only help me with firewire, dial up modems and eithernet - no USB support (I am running the most current OS). Another solution is too increasing the receiving power of a Wi-Fi card is to install a higher gain antenna. But because I have no access to the antenna in this airport equipped laptop, I can't do that either. If I can't solve this, I will have to install another access point in bridge mode to re transmit the signal closer to the laptop. Anyone have any suggestion? I think I am SOL here. (1) lightfastness can be poor compared to Epson (2) The Epson ink pump, printhead, and intellidge system is designed to be used with a certain viscosity of ink. The machinery can breakdown/malfunction in the long run due to ink of different viscosity and other characteristics (3) Software that is designed to operate by reading the intellidge info on the cartridge can become unreliable as the input data becomes unreliable. (4) That helpful Epson service is likely to dry up when you most need it if you develop problems caused by refilled ink. It seems to me little point in buying a well bred horse and then feeding it the poorest food. Save the cheap refill inks for cheap printers. I know the guys selling it reckon it is good stuff, but can you be absolutely certain that it will not harm your printer eventually? Comments? I have never used refab ink cart. I buy new ones at Costco, over the internet, ebay, etc. I know I pay more as compared to a refilled one, but I don't care. When I am printing, I don't want any issues. Costco is my first and best source. I don't think I have ever paid retail. jack From janesprando at comcast.net Fri Aug 25 16:20:04 2006 From: janesprando at comcast.net (janesprando@comcast.net) Date: Fri Aug 25 16:20:13 2006 Subject: [HM] Epson SCANNER won't scan after upgrade to 10.3 Message-ID: <082520062320.10155.44EF85A40008420F000027AB2200734076010B020E9D9F9C0A020E06@comcast.net> I thought I was safe with the printer fixed after upgrading. Straight to Epson support, do not pass go! Sounds like the exact problems I had with my GX5300, Smart panel wouldn't work, then only partly work. It took the boss of the department to get it right, but he did, and the Smart Panel works a treat now. Having said that, all printer functions always worked perfectly if inputed manually using the LCD display on the printer. If yours can work manually too, that will get you working until you get this issue sorted. Considering how relatively unhelpful most ongoing tech support is for most products, Epson has to be one of the best out there. I am always pleased to have an Epson when something goes wrong, for both my recent Epson, but also the one I have that was made last century, and yet is still supported by the company.
