if you are archiving tv programs, I've successfully recorded on the 4 hr mode 
with very satisfactory results on my 3 panasonic standalone dvd recorders.
I would not recommend the 6 hr mode since many stand alone dvd players have 
problems reading that level of compression.
the BEST quality is the 1 hr mode, 2 hr is also quite good.
milage may vary depending on your usage.
