backing up my DV cam video to CD/DVD

Can someone help me on how I can transfer my Dv
cam video onto CD or DVD?
What I did was, I played it back while copying the
video into my hard drive. Not sure if there's a
faster and better way to do this.
Also I've noticed the quality is not that good
when playing it back with media player.

Can someone help me or direct me to some resource
on digital video recording and editing?
I'd love to archive all my home movies onto Cd/
DVDs and I'm trying to avoid going to VHS format.
