DVD authoring: some success, mostly failure

I tried MediaPipe 0.8.9r... briefly. It hung up with the pretty spinning
beach ball. Gotta love that! Also tried it a little while back, but pretty
much the same results. However, I did get some good news this morning.

I took my QT file from iMovie and encoded it thru ffmpegX 0.0.6c. This
latest version includes a preset for NTSC DVD encoding. Using that, ffmpegX
created a VIDEO_TS folder (containing VOB & supporting files), an AUDIO_TS
folder, and a disc image file.

I was then able to use the disc image file with Toast to burn a working
DVD. This newer version of ffmpegX saved me the step of using Sizzle to
create the disc image. The image quality of this DVD looks quite good.
Beats the heck out of a VCD version of the same iMovie.

My next step is trying to find a way to create chapters & menus (sans iDVD
or DVDSP) from my iMovies, still using the ffmpegX/Toast combo.

The problem is that it isn't an MPEG file, its a Quicktime file. You'd
have to convert it in some process as described on the Sizzle web page
- probably running it through MediaPipe. In my experience, MediaPipe is
pretty crashy on encoding though. You might be able to demux the QT
file using MediaPipe, then encode it with ffMpeg from some intermediate
audio and video formats.
