I think the new 8MB Maxtors should be good. I have all IBM GXP's and they've
been fine.

I have a personal bias against WD, but I know many people use them without
troubles.

So, you're going to be generally ok with any of them, as long as they are
made recently. (7200rpm, ATA 100 or better)

For RAM, try going to Crucial.com
I buy a lot of RAM from them and it's a very good cost balance between
no-name generic and top dollar name brand.
