Just saw this older post...
The coolness you wish to have as described is the territory of
dedicated hardware more than ordinary SAN/NAS implementations. Quantel
has all the facilities you describe and more in its proprietary mass
storage system, designed specifically around editing. However, the
XRAID system provides excellent bang for the buck, and will certainly
provide at least some of the capabilities you desire, as DVCAM, like
MiniDV, is a minimal throughput scenario, only a few MB/sec. It's in
the ability to read/write - access the same frames from multiple
stations, and the like, where things may get a bit dicey. It takes a
special breed of hardware and software to make such things flawless. As
it happens, we are considering a similar implementation at our
facility. Will advise when we hammer it for a while. Throwing a million
or two at scenarios like this will definitely provide liquid, versatile
solutions in the proprietary world, but this is the era of democratized
video, courtesy of Final Cut, which as we all know continues to
redefine the post production landscape.
