"Updating Play List" Help

I'm looking for so help with a rather annoying problem.  When ever I make
changes to a clip in the time line Premiere says "Updating Play List".  This
tends to really slow down my editing.  Is there a setting that I'm missing
that will fix this problem.  Premiere also seems a little slow in responding
when I do something simple like lengthen a clip.  Any ideas would be
appreciated.
