Import too dark

New user dilemma. First attempt at iMovie and results poor. I did a analog
conversion from a Canon HI8 through my new Canon ZR70 and the results in
iMovie were so dark compared to the source tape as to be unusable. I then
shot some new footage with the ZR70 both indoors and outdoors to provide
footage with ample light. Did the import and had same results. What I am
seeing in iMovie is 30% to 50% darker then the source. Any suggestions?
