I have the Epson 2450, too. It is very nice indeed--not the cheapest
one out there ($350 street price), but at the time I bought mine a
year ago it was the fastest one for scanning prints (under $1000
anyway)
that I could find. (I did a poll on dealmac.com's forum and got a
bunch
of people to time their scanner, and the 2450 did a scan in 17 seconds
that was taking most scanners a minute or so to do).

I believe it is being replaced with the Epson 3200, which has even
higher resolution (3200 dpi instead of 2400 dpi), which will probably
be at the $400 price level for some time until it has been around
long enough for the price to drop.

A pretty good scanner I got recently is the Epson 2450. I got it
because it can scan up to 4 x 5-inch negatives. While just about any
scanner will scan an 8 x 10 acceptably for video, I mention this Epson

because you asked for a reasonably-priced high-quality scanner.
Unfortunately, it has been discontinued and I'm not sure what the
replacement it. The 2450 was $399, though Costco had it in December for

$50 less. You may still find it available in a few places.

The other decision you're going to face is how to handle the photos in

portrait orientation. If you don't crop into a 4 to 3 ratio, there will

be black bars on the left and right sides. I find that preferable to
cropping sometimes.
